Malcolm Wilson, boss of the Stobart VK Ford Team Pivato was driving for, gave an update on Patrick's condition after the rally finished on Sunday afternoon. Im really pleased to report that theres been good progress made throughout [Saturday] night and his condition is even more stable. He remains in a medically induced coma but doctors are going to operate tomorrow to remove the medical packs from his stomach and the plan is to operate again on Thursday to do the necessary fixes to his pelvis and leg. It looks like hes going to have to spend about a month in Japan but his wife arrived here today and has been able to see him. ################################# UPDATE 1/11/08: Francois Duvals co-driver Patrick Pivatos is in a stable but critical condition in hospital after being injured in an accident on Fridays first day of Rally Japan. The Frenchman was airlifted to Sapporos Higashi Tokushukai hospital yesterday afternoon after his car crashed sideways, at high speed, into a roadside barrier on SS6. Pivato underwent two hours of surgery on Friday evening to repair a broken right tibia and fractured pelvis. During the operation, however, some internal bleeding was discovered and this necessitated a further operation later in the night. The second operation concluded at 0100hrs this morning. A Stobart team representative said Patrick had made steady improvements over the course of the morning and that progress reports would be issued when available. ################################# Patrick Pivato treated for fractured pelvis and leg: Francois Duvals co-driver Patrick Pivato will undergo surgery in Sapporo this evening to repair his pelvis and tibia, both of which were fractured in a crash earlier today. The accident occurred 4.8 kilometres into SS6 (Yuparo) on a fast, muddy section of road when Duval's Ford Focus RS WRC slid wide into a steel crash barrier support pole, heavily impacting on the co-drivers door. First on the scene were Duvals Stobart VK M-Sport team-mates Matthew Wilson and Scott Martin who aided Duval - who was uninjured - in alerting safety officials. After being released from the car, Pivato was airlifted to Higashi Tokushukai hospital in Sapporo where he will be operated on tonight to increase the chances of a speedy recovery. Stobart Ford team principal Malcolm Wilson said: The accident happened when Francois got caught out on a slippery, high-speed section and the car slid wide into the Armco. There was a large steel post holding some wire which the car had a heavy impact with on Patricks side. The event safety crews did a fantastic job in getting to the scene quickly and safely extracting Patrick from the car before airlifting him to hospital. Both Matthew and Scott also need to be commended on their handling of Francois accident; arriving first on the scene they accessed the situation and took the right actions to help their team-mates safely out of the stage. ################################# SS6 stopped after crash for Duval - second update: An accident involving the Ford Focus of Stobart VK M-Sport team drivers Francois Duval and Patrick Pivato stopped the second stage of the afternoon - the 11.10km Yuparo. Duval was the eighth driver to tackle the stage and crashed his car exactly five kilometres after the start line. The stage was stopped to allow the emergency services to attend the scene. A spokesman for the Ford team said it looked like Duvals car had crashed sideways into a barrier, with most of the impact concentrated on the co-drivers side. Patrick Pivato was injured in the collision and is being taken to hospital by ambulance. He is conscious but no further details have been released. Duval is not though to be injured but is going to hospital for precautionary checks.
